These all natural candles are made by us right here on our homestead. They provide us a major source of light after the sun goes down. We’ve used a variety of candles and these are definitely our favorite! They burn bright and clean because they are made only with palm oil and a 100% cotton wick. Unlike petroleum based (paraffin) candles, palm oil does not emit dangerous and toxic fumes into the air when burned. That is wonderful for us because we burn these daily!
No matter how long they are lit, whether it’s 5 minutes or several hours, there is no concern with “tunneling” like wax based candles.
We use a specific form of palm oil called RBD Palm Stearin. It has a very high melting point between 112 and 125 degrees. It is the more solid fraction obtained by fractionation of palm oil after crystallization at controlled temperatures and is often used in soap making.
Because of its high melting point, it is solid at room temperature even during hot summer days. Unlike olive oil (liquid at room temperature) and coconut oil (liquid around 76 degrees) candles, there is no concern with spilling these when they are not lit. Plus they make very interesting and different “mountain” shapes when cooled! They never seem to cool the same way twice.
The mason jar can be easily washed and reused. Using a spoon, just scrape any cooled remnants of palm oil out of the jar. Wash with warm soapy water or put in the dishwasher.
